January - over and out

Why being two-faced isn't always a bad thing

I'm writing a series of (short) posts this year, published on the last day of each month, covering two points - the origin of the name of the month and a key development or milestone we have achieved financially.

So here we go...

The Origin:

In ancient Roman myth Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. He is conventionally thought of as the origin of the word January.

The Highlight:

For a lot of people the start of the new year involves elements of both retrospection and looking ahead. So, like Janus, we've spent January reviewing 2018 and planning for 2019. This has resulted in the development of a simplified but considerably more robust financial model that will underpin and help us achieve strong, sustainable business growth. The new model reflects these wise words:

"Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, but cash is king" (unknown origin)

  • Revenue figures provide a great headline, but they don’t ultimately mean anything if you run out of cash
  • Profit can offer temporary peace of mind but it doesn’t prove that the business is sound
  • But stable, reliable cash flows will truly demonstrate long term success 

This is and always will be our number one priority.
