Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became a Zapnito advisor
My business CB Resourcing, is the leading recruitment business for Industry Analysts, Librarians, Knowledge Managers and Though Leadership Research Management. I met Zapnito through an industry contact and instantly saw how their expertise platform could help our clients.
Why is Zapnito necessary and important today and how do you see Zapnito’s business developing in the next 5 years?
In our industry publishers have always struggled with technology. Getting the right information to the right person is not an easy task and transactional report platforms struggle to translate a firms expertise into an interactive and engaging product. Clients usually consider a firms experts as the core of the services they are buying so an intuitive platform to guide clients to your experts is key. The next five years will be an exciting time for Zapnito as customers face a build or buy scenario and replace old transactional report publishing systems. Why build it yourself when you can have a best of breed system maintained by experts with all the right integrations as standard?
What in your opinion/experience is the single-most important skill in running a successful start-up?
Activity – it doesn’t matter who you know or where you’ve worked these can give you credibility but nothing replaces putting in the energy to your target market. I’m going to sneak in another thing – you need to pick something specific and be good at it, you will sink if you try and be all things to all people.
What has been the biggest lesson you have learnt in your career to date?
Surround yourself with good mentors.
If you could advocate one company to the world (aside from Zapnito & your own), what would it be and why?
I genuinely believe Microsoft have revolutionised technology for small business. Their office 365 app means we don’t have rooms full of servers and the support is really fantastic.
If you had £1 billion and had to invest it in only one of the following three, which would it be and why? 1. Virtual Reality 2. Artificial Intelligence 3. Renewable Energy
I think the technology in virtual reality will become commoditised fairly easily, it’s going to be an interesting space but I think it’ll be a space where people struggle to gain competitive advantage. Artificial intelligence is going to be huge but I think a lot of firms will have to fail over the next few years until the clear leaders emerge. I’d go for renewable energy – the planet needs it but also I believe a lot of the technology is out there and just needs further refining.
