What killed the Aztecs?

Springer Nature’s Nature Ecology & Evolution Community gave fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into a research paper that captured the attention of the mainstream press as it revealed what probably killed the Aztecs. This post is part of the popular ‘Behind the Paper’ series that runs across Springer Nature’s Zapnito-powered communities, in which research scientists tell the real-life stories related to their published research, enabling deeper understanding of their methodology.

The investment trends to follow in 2018

J.P. Morgan’s Timothy Lewis summarised, on Zapnito-powered The UK Edge, the investing styles that worked in the UK equity market in 2017. A must-read for investors navigating the uncertain markets in 2018 and a great example of how the firm is showcasing its expertise.

Bring your audience back to your brand

Interesting new(ish) commentator on the publishing sector, the aptly-named The State of Digital Publishing has gathered some insightful commentary from sector leaders in response to the question: "What are the next steps towards better connecting with our audiences in 2018?”"

Given this is EXACTLY what Zapnito helps our publishing customers to do, we agree 100% with the words of Brian Morrissey, Editor-in-Chief at Digiday who says:

"The focus in 2018 will return to the importance of differentiated brands and direct connections to audiences… Zero in on something people care deeply about, give them what they want on that subject in a unique way, and build a diverse business model predicated on directly knowing the audience versus allowing a third party like Facebook mediate that relationship... Maybe it’s time for publishers to return to the basics of building brands and sustainable business models."

Why you need to reinvent your business

Digital publisher Tapas Media provides an alternative view to the consensus that “the four horsemen of apocalypse” (Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Apple) are destroying publishing, by explaining what can be learnt from these tech giants. A key lesson is to reinvent your business model while making the most of your biggest asset (your people):

"No other industry has better connections to the world’s best writers and storytellers than the publishing industry. Leverage this competitive advantage and reinvent. "

It’s official: trust in platforms and social is on the wane

Digiday’s summary of "The global state of trust in media, in 5 charts" explain that it’s not just the media firms themselves that are falling out of love with the platforms and social media. Data from global communications marketing firm Edelman shows that globally consumers’ trust in social platforms has fallen since last year, creating great opportunity for those who provide trusted expertise (not least publishers) to win back their audience.
